5 Steps to Prioritize & When to Say No

“You can do anything, but you can’t do everything.”

People often ask me how I manage to do so many things… The answer is simple: I focus on the RIGHT things. These are the things that matter most to me, and together we’re going to find the things that are right for you!

The key to finding the right things is learning to identify what means the most to you. From there, we can prioritize those things and make sure they get done. Because guess what? If they don’t get prioritized, they won’t get done. Sometimes that means that there are things that you’ll have to say “no” or “not now” to, because they simply aren’t at the top of the list. But that’s okay! That means that you will have more time and energy to put into the things that matter most to you.

Ready to get started?

1. Write down your WHY.

Why do you do what you do? Your “why” is the thing that drives you and motivates you.

2. Write down your long term goal.

It doesn’t have to be twenty years from now. You can start with where you want to be 6 months from now.

3. Make a to-do list of absolutely EVERYTHING you want to accomplish.

And I mean everything! This list should include anything and everything, from your biz goals to doing the laundry. Write it all down!

Bonus tip: I always call mine a “get to do” list, because they are things that I am grateful that I GET to do them instead of HAVING to do them.

4. Find your top three priorities by asking yourself:
  • Does this bring me joy?
  • Will this bring me closer to my long term goal?
  • What kind of impact does this have? Items that require higher effort should have a greater impact.
5. Focus ONLY on your top three priorities.

If your priorities are large, high-effort items, break them down into smaller tasks and chip away at them until you’re done. For example, my high effort item was to create a website, so a few of my tasks were: write an about page, test my contact form, and choose a font size.

Once you’ve got your top three priorities identified, you’ll also know which items you’ll have to let go (at least for now – you’re one person after all!). Remember, “You can do anything, but you can’t do everything.” Saying no to things that aren’t right for you means that when the right opportunity comes along, you can say YES without hesitation.
