Speckle Blanket Tunisian Crochet Pattern

Ready to dip your toes into Tunisian crochet? The Speckle Blanket is the perfect pattern for beginner Tunisian crocheters to practice their skills and learn how to read a Tunisian crochet pattern.

If you’re looking to learn, or just learned about the joy of Tunisian crochet – this pattern is for you. Once you conquer the mechanics of how to work the stitches, it’s time to learn how to read Tunisian crochet patterns! This beginner Tunisian crochet pattern will introduce you to the common acronyms and reading Tunisian crochet patterns.

It’s perfect for beginners looking for an easy pattern to start out with and gain confidence reading and working up Tunisian patterns. Like regular crochet (and knitting), once you learn to read patterns, you can make just about anything!

Written in 8 sizes from security-king size, you’ve got lots of options to choose the perfect size for your Speckle Blanket.

Pair this meditative project with your favorite DK weight yarn! This pattern works up beautifully in solid colors, but a speckled or variegated yarn is where you’ll really see the beautiful Tunisian texture shine.

Yarn

Using a hand dyed yarn with some variegation or speckles really gives this design something special. Fun pops of color in the yarn really shine in this crochet stitch. I used a DK weight yarn from Hickory Lane Fiber Co.‘s Queen Collection and paired Break Free (blue) for the main color with Galileo (pink) for the border color. These colors were so much fun to work with and I love how well the speckles and bright colors play together in this blanket!

You’ll notice this pattern has a contrasting color border. I love this fun element to the design, but you could also use the main color for your border as well. In the pattern, you’ll find all the yardage information for each size to know exactly how much yarn you’ll need for the main color and border.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, this yarn from WeCrochet is a gorgeous DK weight superwash merino that would work perfectly for this pattern!

Need Help Picking Out a Hook?

This pattern uses a size US I/9 5.5 mm Tunisian crochet hook. Depending on the size blanket you make, you’ll need a crochet hook with a cord, or cable on it. When choosing cord length, keep in mind that you want the total length of your hook AND cord should be at least 1/3 the length of your blanket width. I recommend using a cord close to the width of your blanket so you can comfortably fit all your stitches.

There are a lot of well-loved Tunisian hook sets out there that will give you more flexibility to allow you options when making your next Tunisian crochet projects! My top picks when shopping were this ChaioGoo hook set, Clover hook set, and my favorite was the Lantern Moon hook set!

I absolutely love the Lantern Moon Tunisian crochet hook set that I got. Get all the details and take a closer look at this hook set in my unboxing video on YouTube.

Things I Never Knew About Tunisian Crochet

Have you ever said to yourself, “How come no one ever told me about…?” That’s how I felt when I started learning Tunisian crochet – there were so many things I discovered as I started to learn!

Being an absolute beginner is an exciting, and sometimes humbling experience. When I dove into learning Tunisian crochet, I made some mistakes, bought things I didn’t need, and have a few regrets. Learn from my mistakes and see what the BEST parts of learning Tunisian were for me in this YouTube video:
