Bold stripes meet modern texture with the Bold Stripes Blanket! This baby blanket crochet pattern was designed for a friend who had a sweet little boy shortly after my daughter was born. When designing this blanket, I knew I wanted to do something a little different from my normal style. I wanted something a little bolder and more colorful than my normal neutral earthy color palette.
I set out to find the perfect yarn and color palette (more on that below!) and got to work. I was very intentional in choosing a stitch pattern that would give the stripes a very clean, crisp look. This crochet stitch works up quickly and I love the modern look it gives this baby blanket!

Picking the Perfect Yarn
When searching for the right yarn, I wanted something that came in a variety of colors, would be soft but durable for a baby, and came in smaller skeins so I could have just the right amount for a lot of stripes. I chose a yarn I’ve worked with many times before, that I knew would work perfectly for this project. Swish yarn is a gorgeous merino wool for a great price and it comes in all kinds of colors from neons, to earth tones, and everything in between.
Using a worsted weight yarn like Swish makes this pattern a great candidate for stashbusting! Another great option would be Brava, which is a super affordable acrylic yarn that washes up like a dream! If you want to use up yarn from your stash, keep in mind that each stripe uses about 50 yards total with the entire blanket using about 950 yards.

Planning Your Colors & Stripes
Now for the fun part… choosing the colors! This blanket uses 6 colors with in this yarn with two skeins per each color. There’s a total of 19 stripes, so there’s a lot of flexibility if you choose to do more or less colors! Here’s a few options as you consider how many colors you’d like to do and the approximate yardage for each:
- 6 colors with 150 yards used of each color (1 color will use 200 yards)
- 3 colors with 300 yards used of each color (1 color will use 350 yards)
- 2 colors with 450 yards used of one color, 500 used of the second color
Or you could go with the flow and do a whole rainbow of different colors! It’s a really versatile design to let you choose the perfect colors for your project.
