Free Crochet Pattern: BB Beanie

Meet the BB Beanie! This pattern has extra special meaning and I am so excited to share it with you! When we found out we were expecting, the first thing I did was make this baby hat! (Yes, you read that right – our family is growing and we’ll have a little one joining us this fall!) I’ve called our baby, “BB”, since we found out, and it worked out perfectly as the name of this pattern too.

Baby items are one of my favorite projects to make because they’re so quick, not to mention you get to use the softest yarns! The BB Beanie is no exception with simple stitches, mindless rounds, and a super soft yarn that works up in no time! It’s perfect for beginners and includes a video tutorial to learn my favorite crochet ribbing.

If you’re looking to whip up a gift for a baby shower, this one is perfect! The first thing they’ll notice is how buttery soft the yarn is and who could resist squishing that cute little yarn pom on top?! If you want even more size options, be sure to check out the PDF version of this pattern for additional sizes of this baby hat pattern!

The Softest Yarn EVER!

This is the softest yarn I’ve ever used. If you’ve never tried Snuggle Puff, you’re in for a real treat! It’s a buttery soft cotton fiber that has a blown construction, which means it’s it’s extra soft and fluffy! It’s perfect for baby projects and one of my favorites for baby gifts because the recipients can’t believe how soft it is!

If you want to learn more about Snuggle Puff, check out my WeCrochet yarn review for all the details!

Stitch Explanation

Slip Stitch Ribbing (RibSl)

To work the RibSl: Yo, sl st into third loop

Check out this video tutorial to see how this stitch worked. The photos in the PDF download will help you identify the third loop to work this stitch in.

This slip stitch ribbing (RibSl) is created by adding a yarn over (yo) before making each slip stitch. This adds an additional back loop, or third loop, to the stitch. After the first row, all ribbing stitches are worked into the third loop of the stitch in the previous row.

Optional: For the last stitch of each row, you can work this stitch under both loops normally (shown as loops 1 and 2 in the photo above), instead of into the extra third loop. This will help the stability and structure of the edge of your rows. Take a look at the photos below to see how to work the last stitch.

Pattern Notes

  • Pattern is worked from the bottom up, beginning at the brim.
  • Chain stitches do not count as a stitch.
  • After the ribbing rows are completed, you will join the brim and begin to work on the edge of the rows in continuous rounds for the hat. Do not join or turn after each round unless noted otherwise.
  • Tip: When working RibSl rows, be sure to keep your slip stitches at a relaxed or loose tension.

Pattern

Ch 9

Row 1: (Yo, sl st) in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across, turn. – 8 sts

Row 2: Ch 1, RibSl in each st across, turn. – 8 sts

Note: Be sure to insert your hook into the “third loop” of the stitch in the previous row.

Rows 3-57: Repeat row 2.

Join/Seam: Fold your work so the first row and last row are on top of each other. Sl st row 1 to last row. In the next round, you will be working along the edge of the ribbed rows to create the body of the hat.

Round 1: Ch 1, *sc into each row over the next five rows, sk next row; repeat from * to end of round, sc in remaining rows, join last st with a sl st to the first st of the round, turn. – 48 sts

Round 2: Hdc in each st around, do not turn.

Rounds 3-7: Repeat round 2 five times.

Next Four Rounds: *Hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog; repeat from * to end of round, do not turn. – 16 sts

Final Round: Hdc2tog to end of round, sl st in last st. – 8 sts

Cut yarn, leaving a 6” tail to use to seam the top of the hat.

Seaming

Step 1: Use a tapestry needle to weave the yarn left from the last round through the stitches along the top of the hat.

Step 2: Hold one end of the yarn and pull the other end until you have closed the top of the hat. (Think of a drawstring bag here!)

Step 3: Knot the yarn to secure the top. If you still have a gap, use the yarn and tapestry needle to sew the top closed. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Add a Pom!

Make a yarn pom-pom out of an alternate color yarn to add the perfect finishing touch! I always this pom-pom maker to get the perfect round, fluffy shape!
