Free Crochet Pattern: Pep Coaster & Face Scrubbie

Add some pep into your crochet routine, with the Pep Coaster & Face Scrubbie pattern. This project is short and sweet, just like it’s name! You’ll love this quick and easy free crochet pattern.

This began as an idea to make coasters with one of my favorite stitches, the herringbone stitch! I was in for not one, but two happy accidents with this design… First, I realized how beautiful the herringbone stitch looks in the round! I loved the back side of this project even more than the front! It’s reversible, so you can show off whichever side you like best.

The next surprise with this pattern is that it has a dual purpose! While it might seem like crochet coasters and face scrubbies have nothing in common, this pattern works perfectly for both! this pattern works for both! It’s the perfect size and texture for a coaster or scrubbie, so you get to choose what to use them for!

Share a little pep with someone you love! Use this pattern to make a set as a gift and let the recipient choose whether they’d prefer to use them as coasters or face scrubbies.

Why I Chose This Yarn (Again)…

If you can’t tell by my free patterns, I am obsessed with this yarn! It’s perfect for this pattern because it has a beautiful color selection, a soft but sturdy feel, and cotton does a great job wicking moisture from your glass or soaking up suds for a face scrubbie!

If you’re using this pattern for face scrubbies, I definitely recommend sticking with a cotton yarn like Dishie! For coasters, you’ve got a little more flexibility in terms of fiber content, so you can feel free to use an acrylic, wool, or another worsted weight yarn you have in your stash! This pattern is a great stash buster, so try it out with what you have on hand and adjust your hook size as needed!

  • Sl st – Slip stitch
  • St(s) – Stitch(es)
  • WS – Wrong side

Stitch Explanation

Herringbone Double Crochet (Hbdc)

Herringbone double crochet is a simple variation of double crochet that creates a unique texture for this project.

Follow these steps when working in the hbdc stitch:

  1. Yarn over
  2. Insert hook into stitch
  3. Yarn over and pull through the stitch AND the first loop on hook. Two loops will remain on your hook.
  4. Yarn over and pull through the next loop on hook. Two loops will remain on your hook.
  5. Yarn over and draw through both remaining loops on hook.

Pattern Notes

  • Ch 2 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
  • Round 1 is worked into the magic loop. Tighten the magic loop after completing the first round.
  • This pattern is worked in joined rounds, where you will join the beginning/end of each round.
  • Do not turn after each round.
  • Tip: When working the final round, be sure to keep your slip stitches at a relaxed or loose tension.
  • The finished coaster/scrubbie is reversible. This pattern is worked with the wrong side (WS) facing you, and the right side on the back.
  • If you’d like to make your project larger, you may continue adding new rounds. For each additional round, continue to add one hbdc st before your 2 hbdc increase for your repeat in each round. Each round should continue to increase by 10 sts.
